Kaliningrad : (Highlighted Area) A Russian exclave in EU, disconnected from Mainland Russia geographically
History has never been so kind to anyone till date has is it? Well here I am with a new and refreshing article about “Last voice of the Germans in WWII”
We all have heard about WW II, the occurrence, the participants, what kicked it off in the first place and who actually captured what and why? If you know it already then why should I even try put-in so much effort in entertaining you as a reader with the same old history episode? Here is something interesting that took place during or at the end of the historic war between two nations leaving behind a complex landscape called Kaliningrad (Previously called as “Königsberg”)
It was Germany and Russia this time that fought together hand in hand to destroy Poland as a country, Russia rescuing its blood brother’s Belarusians & Ukrainians stuck in Poland and Germany invading Poland’s westerns part to expand Germanys border further more.
Things seemed quite calm after the invasion and both nations were absolutely doing fine with industrializing their part of land and creating more jobs for their citizens but slightly things did not seem too well within the most power allies even after the Non-aggression Agreement between them. It was bound that the countries would not attack each other for next 10 years and will indeed help each other build healthy nation.
But it was only till Soviet invaded Rumania (Now called Romania) and captured it, which made Hitler think Germanys borders would be at risk of losing its territories on the western border of the Russia. Following this, on 22nd June 1941 Germany attacked Russia with its forces and with all its power. On the other hand USSR was left with nothing but surprise; it took little while for the Red Army (Russian force) to understand what had actually happened. According to the pact signed between them it was highly impossible to even think of Germany attacking USSR.
Once it was clear that the attack was quite planned by the Hitler, Stalin ordered Red Army to march forward and start the war with full force. Germany was 5 days ahead in planning and executing the attack but Russia did later manage to overrun German forces and grew even stronger as the war commenced.
Russia hardly took 3 days to completely capture Königsberg (Currently a Russian town). The war started on 6th April 1945 and lasted for only 3 days ending on 9th April 1945. This East Prussian region had never experienced such a heavy bombing, shelling and mass destruction for the past 700 years. The total of 2.2 million population of Nazi origin was decreased to 10% of the total civilization in only 3 days of time by the Russians.
Later the civilians were given very few options to survive in the region itself. Once the actual origin people were wiped off completely, Russia then re-populated the region with their people from Ukraine and Belarus. The city was renamed as “Kaliningrad Oblast” after the Soviet leader called “Mikhail Kalinin”.
This place has since then created havoc in the eastern European region. Kaliningrad is a sandwich Russian city between Poland and Lithuania. After the fall of Soviet Union these countries gained independence and have since then come into NATO for their own security from Russia.
- How does the modern world see the Current NATO and Kaliningrad?
Well, there have been many mainstream print media that have published several articles of Russia using Kaliningrad region for its military purposes. There have been many recent claims that Russia is using this region as its Nukes base (Keeping in mind the geographical advantage it has over other EU countries)
Russia has always put the minor power or the weaker military zone nations under pressure even after the destruction of USSR, few of publicised events about Russia’s attitude towards weak military nations can be listed here...
Russia invaded Georgia in 2008 and occupied “South Ossetia” & “Abkhazia”
Russia invaded Ukraine in 2014 and annexed “Crimea”
Now that EU faces threats from the Russia, US has come forward to help and maintain peace in the region and make sure that defense is matched with that of Russia by taking several steps like using Germany as its permanent military and Air base, using Poland & Romania as missile base and finally using NATO Nukes base Turkey.
